Halving
A scheduled reduction in the rate new ZEC is issued to miners, roughly every four years.
A halving is a protocol-scheduled event where the block reward — the amount of new ZEC issued to miners for securing the network — is reduced. This controls the pace at which new coins enter circulation, similar to Bitcoin's halving schedule.
A pending network upgrade called NU7, under ZIP 218, would change how the halving interval and per-block subsidy are measured, alongside a move to much faster block times — but as of today it hasn't activated yet.
