Zcash Lockbox Holds 73,000 ZEC Reserved for Future Community Funding

The Zcash Lockbox is a reserve of coins controlled by the protocol itself, with no owner, address, or private key. Since the NU6 upgrade in November 2024, 12% of every block reward flows into it rather than going to miners or other recipients.

The lockbox grows by approximately 0.1875 ZEC per block, or about 216 ZEC per day. As of now, it holds roughly 73,000 ZEC. Although these coins count toward Zcash's issued supply, they sit in no wallet and cannot currently be spent—no mechanism for spending them has been defined under the protocol's rules, according to ZIP 1015.

The stated purpose is to reserve funding for future Zcash initiatives while allowing the community to decide later how to use it, without anyone holding the money in the interim. In 2025, a one-time distribution of 78,750 ZEC from an earlier lockbox balance was moved to a separate multisig controlled address for grants, while the ongoing 12% stream continued to accumulate.
