Zcash Staking: Can You Stake ZEC, and Is Proof of Stake Coming?
You cannot stake Zcash on mainnet today. Zcash (ZEC) is secured by proof-of-work mining, so there are no validators, no delegation and no protocol staking rewards. A hybrid proof-of-stake design called Crosslink is being tested, but it has no mainnet date and is not part of the next network upgrade, NU7.
That is the honest answer to "Zcash staking," and it is worth knowing before you hand your ZEC to anyone who promises staking yield. This guide explains why Zcash has no staking, what Crosslink would change if it is ever adopted, the real ways people earn a return on ZEC today, and the scams that target people searching for ZEC staking.
Zcash staking at a glance (October 2026)
Mainnet staking: not available. Consensus: proof of work (Equihash). Proof of stake plans: Crosslink, a PoW + PoS hybrid, is running on an incentivized test network with no mainnet activation height. NU7: the upcoming upgrade does not include Crosslink. "ZEC staking" offers today: exchange earn or lending products, not protocol staking — or scams.
Can you stake Zcash?
No, not on the live network. Staking only exists on blockchains that use proof of stake (PoS), where holders lock up coins to help validate blocks and earn rewards for it. Zcash uses proof of work instead: miners run specialized hardware to solve Equihash puzzles, and the block reward goes to the miner who finds each block, minus the portions set aside for development funding.
In a proof-of-work system, simply holding coins does nothing for network security, so the protocol has nothing to pay holders for. That is why you will not find a "stake" button in Zodl, Zingo, Zkool or any other Zcash wallet on mainnet.
Is Zcash moving to proof of stake? Crosslink explained
There is a serious, funded effort to add proof of stake to Zcash, but it is not a switch from mining to staking. Crosslink is a hybrid protocol developed by Shielded Labs, building on the "Trailing Finality Layer" design. In short:
- Miners keep producing blocks. Proof-of-work mining and the Equihash hardware behind it stay.
- Stakers and "finalizers" add finality. A proof-of-stake layer marks blocks as final, which is meant to make deep chain reorganizations, and the attacks that rely on them, far harder.
- ZEC holders could delegate. Holders would choose which finalizers to back. Shielded Labs calls stakers "Protocol Guardians", because picking a finalizer is a decision about who you trust to help secure the network.
Where Crosslink stands today
- Prototype completed, now in "productization". Shielded Labs moved Crosslink from prototype to production-readiness work in spring 2026.
- Incentivized test network. The first "Crosslink Feature Net" season began on April 15, 2026. Participants earn test tokens (cTAZ) by mining, staking or running finalizers, which are converted into small amounts of real ZEC at the end of each season. Shielded Labs allocated 500 ZEC to the whole program. A second season was running as of early October 2026, including delegation from the Zingo wallet.
- Test reward split. Feature Net rewards are modeled on how Crosslink could pay out if adopted on mainnet: 40% to miners, 40% to stakers and 20% to a dev fund. That is a test configuration, not a decided mainnet rule.
- Not in NU7. ZIP 259, the deployment specification for Zcash's next upgrade, covers 25-second blocks, fee changes and funding-stream updates. It does not include Crosslink. See our NU7 explainer.
- No mainnet date. We found no deployment ZIP and no activation height for proof of stake on mainnet. Bringing it there would need a final specification, audits and a network upgrade that the community accepts.
Not everyone agrees
Proof of stake is a live debate in the Zcash community, not a settled plan. Some community members argue on the forum that proof of work "must never be abandoned," while others see Crosslink's approach — PoS finality on top of PoW — as a good compromise. How block rewards would be split between miners and stakers is part of that debate, together with wider discussions about Zcash's development funding after 2028. Who decides, and how, is covered in Zcash Coinholder Voting and Who Governs Zcash?.
How to earn yield on ZEC today
If your goal is a return on ZEC rather than staking itself, these are the real options. None of them is protocol staking, and each one has a catch.
| Option | How it pays | Main risks |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange "earn" programs | The exchange pays interest, usually by lending your ZEC out | Custody risk (the exchange can fail or freeze withdrawals), no self-custody, no shielded privacy, rates can change at any time |
| Crypto lending platforms | Borrowers pay interest on ZEC you lend | Borrower and platform default, liquidation events, often custodial |
| Mining | Block rewards for finding blocks | Needs Equihash ASICs and cheap electricity; NU7 will change rewards per block |
| ZCSH High Income ETF (proposed) | Planned payouts every two weeks from option premiums | Not launched yet; capped upside; payouts may be return of capital |
| Crosslink Feature Net | Small real-ZEC rewards for testing | Test network: rewards are limited, seasonal and can change |
A few notes:
- "Earn" is lending, not staking. If an exchange pays interest on ZEC, your coins are lent to someone else, typically margin traders. That is a credit risk, and it ended badly for customers of several crypto lenders that collapsed in 2022.
- Mining is the closest thing to "staking rewards" Zcash has, but it is a hardware business. Check the numbers with our Zcash mining calculator and read How Zcash Is Mined before buying equipment.
- The income ETF is a brokerage product. Grayscale's proposed fund would sell options on ZCSH to generate payouts, and it does not hold ZEC. See Zcash Income ETF explained.
Zcash staking scams to avoid
Because people search for "Zcash staking" and the real answer is "it doesn't exist yet," the gap is a magnet for scams. Common patterns:
- "Stake ZEC for 20% APY" websites that ask you to deposit ZEC to an address. There is nothing to stake on mainnet, so your deposit goes to the scammer.
- Fake wallet apps or browser extensions with a "staking" tab that ask for your seed phrase. No legitimate Zcash wallet will ever ask you to type your seed phrase into a website.
- "Validator" or "node" investment schemes promising fixed daily returns from running Zcash validators. Zcash mainnet has no validators.
- Impersonation in chats and comment sections, often using Crosslink news as a hook ("staking is live, claim your rewards").
If you want to try Crosslink, use only links published by Shielded Labs on the official Zcash Community Forum, and remember that the Feature Net is a test network. For keeping ZEC safe in your own custody, start with How to Choose a Zcash Wallet.
Summary
- Zcash staking does not exist on mainnet. Zcash is proof of work.
- Crosslink is a hybrid PoW + PoS proposal on an incentivized test network. It has no mainnet date and is not part of NU7.
- Yield on ZEC today comes from lending, mining or (once launched) an options-based ETF, each with real risks.
- Anyone selling ZEC staking today is offering lending at best, and a scam at worst.
Sources & methodology
This guide is based on ZIP 259 (the NU7 deployment specification) in the zcash/zips repository,
Shielded Labs' announcements on the Zcash Community Forum ("Crosslink: Incentivized Feature Net",
April 2, 2026, and later updates through October 2, 2026) and the forum's "Crosslink Deployment
Updates" thread. Figures for the Feature Net (start date, 500 ZEC allocation, 40/40/20 test reward
split) are taken from those announcements. We will update this page when Crosslink gets a
deployment ZIP or an activation height. This article is educational and is not investment advice.
Common questions
Can you stake Zcash?
Not on the Zcash mainnet as of October 2026. Zcash is secured by proof-of-work mining, so there are no validators and no protocol-level staking rewards. Any offer to stake ZEC today is either an exchange earn or lending product, or a scam.
Is Zcash moving to proof of stake?
There is a concrete proposal: Crosslink, a hybrid design from Shielded Labs that keeps proof-of-work mining and adds proof-of-stake finality on top. It is running on an incentivized test network, but it has no mainnet activation height and is not part of the NU7 upgrade.
When will Zcash staking start?
There is no confirmed date. Crosslink would need a finished specification, audits and a network upgrade that the community accepts. NU7, the next upgrade, does not include it. Treat any specific staking launch date you see online as speculation.
What are Zcash staking rewards?
On mainnet there are none yet. On Crosslink's test network, rewards are modeled as 40% to miners, 40% to stakers and 20% to a dev fund to simulate how Crosslink could work if adopted. That split is a test setting, not a decided mainnet rule.
How can I earn yield on ZEC today?
Through custodial exchange earn or lending programs, by lending ZEC on a crypto lending platform, by mining with Equihash ASICs, or, once launched, through the proposed ZCSH High Income ETF. Each option carries its own risks, and the custodial ones mean giving up control of your keys.
Does Zcash have a proof-of-stake date?
No. Searches for a Zcash proof of stake date usually come from speculative articles. As of October 2026, no deployment ZIP or activation height for proof of stake on mainnet has been published.
Is ZEC staking on an exchange real staking?
No. Because Zcash has no staking, an exchange that pays interest on ZEC is lending it out or running a promotion. Your coins sit in the exchange's custody, you lose shielded privacy for them, and you depend on the exchange staying solvent.
