What Is Zcash (ZEC)? A Beginner's Guide to Private Digital Cash

Zcash (ticker: ZEC) is a cryptocurrency built on the same basic idea as Bitcoin — a public, decentralized ledger that anyone can verify — but with one major difference: it lets you choose whether your transactions are public or private.

Launched in October 2016, Zcash was created by a team of cryptographers led by Zooko Wilcox-O'Hearn, building on academic research into a technique called zk-SNARKs (zero-knowledge succinct non-interactive arguments of knowledge). That's a mouthful, but the idea is simple: it's a form of math that lets you prove a transaction is valid — the sender had the funds, no coins were created out of thin air, nothing was spent twice — without revealing who sent what to whom, or how much.

Why does privacy matter in a cryptocurrency?

Bitcoin is often assumed to be anonymous, but it isn't. Every transaction is permanently recorded on a public ledger, and once a wallet address is linked to a real identity — through an exchange, a merchant, or just careless reuse — that person's entire transaction history becomes visible to anyone who looks. Blockchain analysis firms make a business out of exactly this.

Zcash was designed to fix that gap. Financial privacy is the norm in everyday life: you don't publish your bank statement, and most merchants don't publish their revenue in real time. Zcash gives digital cash the same property while keeping the parts that make cryptocurrency useful — a fixed, transparent supply schedule and a network no single company controls.

Shielded vs. transparent addresses

Zcash has two kinds of addresses:

  • Transparent addresses (t-addresses) work like Bitcoin — balances and transaction history are publicly visible on the blockchain.
  • Shielded addresses (z-addresses) encrypt the sender, receiver, and amount using zero-knowledge proofs. The transaction is still verified by the network, but its details stay private.

Because both types exist on the same network, users decide case by case whether a given transaction should be public or private. We cover exactly how that works, and why it matters, in Shielded vs. Transparent Zcash Transactions Explained.

Key facts about Zcash

  • Fixed supply: like Bitcoin, Zcash has a hard cap of 21 million ZEC.
  • Halvings: block rewards halve on a schedule, roughly every four years, controlling issuance.
  • Proof of Work → transitioning ecosystem: Zcash has historically used Proof of Work mining; always check current network parameters, since protocol upgrades (called "network upgrades") have changed shielded pool defaults and fee structures over time.
  • Open source: the protocol and reference wallet code are publicly auditable.

Is Zcash the same as Bitcoin?

No. Zcash is its own independent blockchain and network with its own coin (ZEC), not a token built on top of Bitcoin. It shares Bitcoin's general model (UTXOs, proof-of-work security, a capped supply) but adds the optional shielded-transaction layer that Bitcoin does not have. Getting started

If you're new to Zcash, the usual path is:

  1. Get a wallet that supports shielded addresses — see our Zcash wallet guide.
  2. Acquire some ZEC, either from an exchange or directly from someone else — see How to Buy Zcash.
  3. Send it to a shielded address if privacy is the point of using Zcash in the first place.
