How to Buy Zcash Without KYC: Decentralized Swaps, DEXs and P2P Explained
You can buy Zcash without KYC by swapping crypto you already hold into ZEC through non-custodial routes: wallet-integrated swaps powered by NEAR Intents (Zodl, Cake Wallet), the Maya Protocol and THORChain liquidity networks, or peer-to-peer trades on Bisq. No account, no ID upload, and the ZEC lands in a wallet you control. The catch: you need crypto to start with, fees and spreads are higher than on a centralized exchange, and you should shield the ZEC afterwards.
This guide is the decentralized counterpart to our How to Buy Zcash guide, which covers the regulated exchange route. Here we walk through every no-KYC option that actually works in October 2026, what each one costs, where the privacy limits are, and how to avoid the fake "anonymous swap" sites that target exactly this search.
Before you start
No-KYC does not mean no rules. Non-custodial swaps are legal in most places, but a crypto-to-crypto trade can be a taxable event, and some countries restrict privacy coins. This article explains the technology, not the law where you live. It is not investment, legal or tax advice.
Why people buy Zcash without KYC
Zcash exists so that payments can be private. For many users it makes little sense to buy a privacy coin by first handing a passport scan to an exchange that permanently links their identity to the coins. A KYC exchange also knows your withdrawal address, which means the starting point of your ZEC is known to a third party even if you shield it later.
Non-custodial swaps avoid that link: no account, no identity, and the ZEC goes straight into a wallet where you hold the keys. They also protect you from exchange failures and withdrawal freezes, because your coins never sit in someone else's custody.
The trade-off is that there is no fiat on-ramp. Every route below starts with crypto you already own, usually Bitcoin, Ethereum, a stablecoin or Monero. If you only have euros or dollars, you will need a regulated on-ramp for that first step, or a cash-based peer-to-peer trade.
Your options at a glance
| Route | Account needed | Where the ZEC lands | Typical cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wallet swap via NEAR Intents (Zodl, Cake Wallet) | No | Your wallet, shielded address possible | Swap spread + network fees | Easiest option, mobile |
| Maya Protocol (via THORSwap, LeoDex, Edge, SwapKit apps) | No | Your transparent address | ~0.3–1% + outbound fee | Larger amounts, many source chains |
| THORChain (ZEC pool live since Oct 2, 2026) | No | Your transparent address | Spread depends on pool depth | Users already on THORChain |
| Bisq (P2P marketplace) | No (desktop app) | Your transparent address | Trade fee + security deposit | Trading BTC for ZEC with real people |
| Atomic swaps (experimental) | No | Your address | Varies | Technical users only |
Option 1: Swap inside your wallet (NEAR Intents)
This is the simplest route and the one we recommend to most people. Two of the three wallets in our best Zcash wallets guide have swaps built in, both powered by NEAR Intents, a system where you declare the swap you want and a network of solvers competes to fill it. You never create an account.
- Zodl (formerly Zashi, by Electric Coin Company): built-in private swaps let you fund the wallet from Bitcoin, Ethereum and other chains, or swap ZEC out again. The ZEC can arrive directly in your shielded balance.
- Cake Wallet: added shielded Zcash with NEAR Intents swaps on January 15, 2026, and shields by default.
Step by step (Zodl or Cake Wallet):
- Install the wallet from the official app store listing and back up the seed phrase offline.
- Open the swap feature, choose the asset you are paying with (for example BTC) and ZEC as the destination.
- The wallet shows a quote. Check the rate against a price site before accepting: the spread is the fee.
- Send the source asset to the deposit address the wallet displays. Start with a small test amount the first time.
- Wait for confirmations on the source chain. The ZEC then appears in your wallet, usually within minutes.
NEAR Intents is now the largest cross-chain source of ZEC inflows: in one week in late September 2026, Bitcoin alone contributed $8.58 million in swaps into ZEC through it, with Ethereum, Tron and Solana behind it.
Option 2: Maya Protocol
Maya Protocol is a non-custodial, cross-chain liquidity network, a cousin of THORChain, where ZEC is held natively in a liquidity pool rather than as a wrapped token. Zcash went live on Maya in May 2025, and by early 2026 the integration had handled close to $600 million in cumulative ZEC volume. Supported source chains include Bitcoin, Ethereum, Arbitrum, Dash, Kujira and THORChain.
You do not use Maya directly; you use an interface that routes through it:
- THORSwap or LeoDex (web interfaces),
- the Edge wallet, which offers Zcash swaps through Maya,
- any app built on SwapKit, the SDK that aggregates Maya Protocol and NEAR Intents and picks the best route automatically.
Step by step (web interface):
- Open the interface from the link on the protocol's official site, never from a search ad.
- Pick the source asset and ZEC as the output.
- Paste your transparent Zcash address (starting with
t1). As of October 2026, SwapKit-powered Maya swaps deliver to transparent addresses; shielded delivery is still being evaluated. - Review the quote, including the outbound fee, and confirm. Fees typically land around 0.3–1% plus network costs, depending on the route and pool depth.
- Once the ZEC arrives, shield it (see below).
Option 3: THORChain
THORChain, the larger sibling of Maya, activated a native ZEC pool on October 2, 2026 after its nodes began watching the Zcash blockchain. ZEC is now part of THORChain's cross-chain network without any wrapped token, and trading follows the pool going live. Liquidity is still shallow in this early stage, so expect wider spreads than on NEAR Intents or Maya until it deepens. The process is the same as for Maya: use a THORChain interface, paste a transparent ZEC address, confirm.
Option 4: Peer-to-peer on Bisq
Bisq is a decentralized, open-source desktop marketplace where you trade directly with another person, with a security deposit protecting both sides. It supports ZEC, but only transparent addresses. Shielded delivery is not possible, so you shield after the trade. Bisq trades are denominated in Bitcoin, which makes it a good route if you hold BTC and want to deal with a human counterparty rather than a liquidity pool. Expect fewer offers and slower settlement than a swap protocol.
Note that RoboSats, often listed alongside Bisq, trades Bitcoin only and is not a way to get ZEC.
Option 5: Atomic swaps (experimental)
Atomic swaps let two parties exchange coins across chains with no intermediary at all. Projects in the Zcash community have worked on BTC/ZEC atomic swaps (for example "Zwap"), but as of October 2026 none of them is a polished, widely used product. Treat this as a route for technical users who read the code, not as a way to buy ZEC today.
After the swap: shield your ZEC
Most routes above deliver ZEC to a transparent address, which is as public as a Bitcoin address. Moving the coins into the shielded pool is the step that gives you Zcash's privacy:
- In your wallet, send the ZEC from the transparent address to your own shielded address, or use the wallet's "shield funds" button (Zodl, Cake Wallet and Zkool all have one).
- From then on, spend from the shielded balance.
Our guide on shielded vs. transparent transactions explains what each address type reveals. If you used a wallet swap via NEAR Intents that delivered straight to a shielded address, you can skip this step.
Fees, slippage and limits: the honest comparison
- Spreads are the fee. Swap routes rarely show a line item; the rate you get versus the market price is what you pay. On small, thin pools (THORChain's new ZEC pool, some Maya pairs) this can be several percent. Compare the quote with the live ZEC price before confirming.
- Network fees on both chains. You pay the source chain's fee to send and, on Maya and THORChain, an outbound fee to receive.
- No fiat. You cannot pay with a card or bank transfer on any of these routes.
- Rate changes mid-swap. Quotes are valid for a short window; volatile markets can move the final amount.
- Liquidity limits. Very large swaps move the pool price against you. Split big amounts.
Scams that target "no-KYC Zcash" searches
Because this is a common search, it attracts fake services. Red flags:
- Sites promising "instant anonymous ZEC" at a fixed rate with no slippage. Real swaps always quote a changing rate.
- "Swap" links in DMs, Telegram replies or comment sections. Only use interfaces linked from the protocol's official website or a wallet's official app listing.
- Fake wallet apps that add a "swap" or "no-KYC buy" button and ask for your seed phrase. No legitimate wallet or swap ever needs your seed phrase.
- Address-swapping malware. Always re-check the receive address in the interface against the one in your wallet, especially on desktop.
Start every new route with a small test amount. For safe custody basics, see How to Choose a Zcash Wallet.
Which route should you use?
- Just want ZEC in a wallet, on your phone, with the least friction: Zodl or Cake Wallet swap via NEAR Intents.
- Larger amounts or a source chain the wallets don't support: Maya Protocol through THORSwap, LeoDex, Edge or a SwapKit app.
- You prefer trading with a person and hold Bitcoin: Bisq.
- You already use THORChain: its new ZEC pool, once liquidity is deeper.
If you would rather buy with euros or dollars and accept KYC, or want to compare the regulated options, read How to Buy Zcash and our Zcash exchange directory, which lists the decentralized routes above next to the centralized ones.
Sources & methodology
This guide is based on the official documentation and announcements of Maya Protocol (Zcash integration), SwapKit (Zcash cross-chain swaps and address support), NEAR Intents, Cake Wallet (Zcash launch, January 15, 2026), Zodl (built-in private swaps), THORChain's ZEC pool activation on October 2, 2026, the Bisq community forum on Zcash address support, and NEAR Intents flow data reported by CipherScan for late September 2026. Fee ranges are typical observed values, not guarantees; always check the live quote. We will update this page as shielded delivery on Maya or THORChain changes.
Common questions
Can you buy Zcash without KYC?
Yes. You can swap another cryptocurrency you already hold into ZEC through non-custodial routes such as NEAR Intents (built into Zodl and Cake Wallet), Maya Protocol, THORChain or peer-to-peer marketplaces like Bisq. None of these require an account or identity documents. Buying ZEC with euros or dollars, however, almost always involves a regulated on-ramp that does require KYC.
What is the easiest way to swap into ZEC without an exchange account?
A wallet with built-in swaps. Zodl and Cake Wallet both let you send Bitcoin, Ethereum, stablecoins or other assets and receive ZEC straight into your own wallet, powered by NEAR Intents. There is no signup, and the ZEC can land directly in a shielded address.
Is a decentralized Zcash swap really anonymous?
It is private, not magic. There is no account and no ID, but the chain you send from is public, and most swap routes deliver ZEC to a transparent address first. Move the ZEC into your shielded pool afterwards. Also remember that a swap can be a taxable event, and you are responsible for the rules where you live.
Does Maya Protocol support shielded Zcash?
As of October 2026, SwapKit-powered Maya swaps deliver ZEC to a transparent address; shielded delivery is being evaluated. NEAR Intents, used by Zodl and Cake Wallet, can deliver to a shielded address. In both cases you can shield the ZEC yourself in one step afterwards.
Can I use THORChain to buy Zcash?
THORChain activated a native ZEC pool on October 2, 2026, so ZEC is now part of its cross-chain network. Liquidity is still shallow in this early stage, so expect wider spreads than on larger routes until the pool grows.
Are no-KYC Zcash swaps legal?
Using a non-custodial swap is legal in most countries, but tax and reporting rules still apply to you. Some jurisdictions restrict privacy coins or require reporting of crypto-to-crypto trades. This guide explains the technology; it is not legal or tax advice.
How do I avoid scams when swapping into Zcash?
Use swaps built into reputable wallets or interfaces linked from the protocol's official site, never a link from a DM or an ad. Check that the receive address shown is yours, start with a small test amount, and treat any site promising fixed rates with no slippage or 'instant anonymous ZEC' as a red flag.
