A Solana-based memecoin is creating an unusual new source of demand for Zcash.
Anonymous Cat (ZCAT) has distributed approximately 2,320 ZEC — worth around $2.8 million — to its holders, according to CoinDesk, as Zcash surged beyond the $1,200 level.
The mechanism behind it is simple:
Every ZCAT transfer triggers a 3% tax. Most of that tax is set aside rather than passed on, with the proceeds converted into ZEC on the open market and distributed to eligible ZCAT holders.
Wallets holding at least $20 worth of ZCAT can receive the ZEC rewards.
📊 The numbers so far:
• ~2,320 ZEC distributed
• ~$2.8 million in ZEC rewards
• 470,000+ payments made
• ZEC purchased on the open market
What makes the model particularly interesting for the Zcash ecosystem is that ZEC isn't simply being mentioned or used for marketing — the mechanism creates actual purchases of ZEC whenever sufficient ZCAT activity generates fees.
It also represents an unusual crossover between two very different corners of crypto: memecoin activity on Solana and Zcash as the reward asset.
There is an important caveat: these are not native Zcash staking rewards. The distributions depend on ZCAT transaction activity, meaning lower activity would also reduce the amount of ZEC purchased and distributed.
Still, more than 470,000 individual ZEC payments and 2,320 ZEC distributed already make ZCAT an interesting real-world example of another crypto project building Zcash directly into its economic model.
A memecoin generating demand for ZEC — not something many would have predicted. 🛡️
