Zcash launched with one of the most unusual cryptographic ceremonies in crypto history.
Before Zcash went live in 2016, six participants independently generated pieces of the cryptographic parameters required for the original Sprout system.
The security assumption was powerful:
If even ONE participant successfully destroyed their secret contribution, nobody could reconstruct the complete secret material — often called the “toxic waste.”
Participants went to extraordinary lengths to keep their contributions isolated and destroy sensitive data afterward.
Why did it matter?
If the complete secret had ever been reconstructed, it could theoretically have been used to create counterfeit ZEC without detection.
The ceremony became an important chapter in Zcash history — and later Zcash upgrades moved beyond the original Sprout setup.
Privacy wasn't simply added to Zcash.
It was engineered from day one. 🔐
