Balaji Srinivasan, former CTO of Coinbase, has outlined a vision for two distinct roles for Bitcoin and Zcash in the financial system.

According to Srinivasan, Bitcoin will function as the transparent reserve asset of Western institutions, where verifiability and public accounting of holdings matter. Zcash, by contrast, will serve as encrypted digital cash for individuals worldwide who prioritize financial privacy.

Srinivasan framed the distinction in simple terms: Bitcoin proves what you hold, while Zcash protects what you own. He stated, "Bitcoin continues as a transparent asset, the reserve asset of Western institutions. But Zcash I think becomes the encrypted cash of individuals around the world."

The thesis suggests complementary use cases rather than direct competition—institutions requiring transparent, auditable reserves would favor Bitcoin, while individuals seeking privacy in their transactions would turn to Zcash.
