ZCASH IS JUST 1% OF BITCOIN — BUT ITS VOLATILITY TELLS A BIGGER STORY

Zcash remains tiny compared with Bitcoin — yet its market behavior is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

According to a new analysis, Zcash currently represents only around 1% of Bitcoin’s market capitalization, while its annualized volatility over the past year has been approximately 140%, compared with roughly 40% for Bitcoin.

That makes ZEC more than 3× as volatile as BTC.

But volatility isn't necessarily just a weakness.

Zach Pandl, Head of Research at Grayscale, argues that Zcash's higher volatility could eventually make it particularly interesting for an options market. Higher volatility generally translates into higher option premiums.

The analysis illustrates this with a hypothetical covered-call strategy: under current volatility assumptions, ZEC could potentially generate an implied premium yield of around 70% annualized, versus roughly 30% for Bitcoin.

⚠️ These figures are hypothetical — not guaranteed returns — and ZEC's higher volatility also means substantially higher downside risk.

There is another important part of the thesis.

As AI makes blockchain analysis and the identification of activity on transparent ledgers increasingly sophisticated, financial privacy could become more valuable rather than less.

Bitcoin offers transparency by default.

Zcash offers something fundamentally different: the ability to transact using shielded transactions designed to protect financial information.

With Zcash still representing only a fraction of Bitcoin's valuation, the gap between the two networks remains enormous.

The question is whether the market will eventually assign a much higher value to privacy.
