ZCASH HISTORY: EDWARD SNOWDEN WAS THERE FROM THE BEGINNING

For nearly six years, one of the most famous names in the global privacy movement kept a major Zcash secret.

In 2022, Edward Snowden revealed that he had participated in Zcash’s original 2016 trusted setup ceremony — under the pseudonym “John Dobbertin.”

Snowden was one of six participants who helped generate the cryptographic parameters required for Zcash at launch.

Why did this matter?
The ceremony was designed so that if even ONE participant honestly destroyed their secret contribution, the combined secret — often called “toxic waste” — could not be reconstructed.

Snowden later explained that his involvement had deliberately been kept private to avoid his reputation overshadowing the project.

It’s a remarkable piece of Zcash history:
Before Zcash even launched, one of the world’s most recognizable privacy advocates had already played a role in its cryptographic foundations.

From “John Dobbertin” in 2016 to the public revelation in 2022.

Privacy wasn’t just the product.

It was part of Zcash’s history from day one.
