Mert argues that privacy could represent the next major stage in crypto’s evolution — with Zcash bringing private digital money back into focus.
He maps crypto’s evolution into four stages:
Bitcoin → Programmability → Scalability → Privacy
Bitcoin proved decentralized digital money could work. Ethereum expanded crypto through programmability, while the next wave focused heavily on scalability.
But privacy was largely left behind.
“People slept on the privacy part.”
Mert points to Zcash as part of the answer — bringing privacy, one of crypto’s original cypherpunk principles, back into the conversation.
His view: after years of progress in programmability and scalability, privacy remains one of crypto’s unfinished chapters.
